SipSum Cocktailz Sunday Specialz

Football and Sunday always means there must be a Caesar nearby!! With all the different hot sauces available and unlimited garnish ideas, you can make your Caesar to your specifications and still maintain what a Caesar stands for.

The "Caesar" cocktail has been around for 40+ years now. I have seen it in many variations and in a variety of heats. Play with your Caesar and make it yours!!!

THE STORY OF THE CAESAR

A Canadian creation, the Caesar (or Bloody Caesar) was invented in 1969 to celebrate the opening of Marco’s Italian restaurant at the Calgary Inn (now the Westin Calgary). Resident mixologist and food and beverage manager, Walter Chell, was commissioned to develop a new cocktail. He took inspiration from the flavours of Spaghetti Vongole (spaghetti with clams), and combined sweet (tomato juice), salty (clam nectar), sour (lime), spicy (Worcestershire sauce) and bitter (celery salt) into his new concoction. After naming it for the Roman emperor, legend has it that he served one to an Englishman who exclaimed: "That's a good bloody Caesar!"
That same year Mott’s Clamato was introduced and is, without a doubt, Canada’s original and most popular Caesar mix found on store shelves across the country and isused in most bars and restaurants. In fact, many establishments use the Caesar as their signature cocktail, with more than 350 million Caesars made with Mott’s Clamato every year! No wonder it is Canada’s Cocktail.

Stick Food!!
Steve and I pretty much love and food that comes on a stick. We host a lot of parties and the biggest hit for appies is anything on a stick. It's not messy unless you make it messy and it's easy to serve.

You can make this a easy or as difficult as you wish. Meaning you can start with a simple meatball on put it on a stick or you can make prucuitto wrapped mozza balls. Really these days you can put anything on a stick. My favorite is...

Bacon Wrapped Pickles
12 baby dills
1/2 pack of low sodium bacon
12 Wooden skewers
2 cups of canola or vegetable oil

Poke your skewers halfway through the pickles starting from the end of the pickle. Cut the bacon strips so they are half the size. wrap the half pieces of bacon around you pickles so they are snug and line up on a plate. Use a small pot and put the oil at high heat fo 2-3 minutes. Lower the heat to medium before dunking in your tasty little wrapped pickles. Let them sizzle in your pot until they are crispy brown on the outside.
you can serve with a dip of our choice. We like to use creamy cucumber!!
Cool little blog with 52 other foods on a stick:

SipSum Cocktailz Sinful Sauce
1/4 Cup Cream Cheese
1/4 Cup Sour Cream
1/4 Cup of Roasted Garlic
1/4 Cup of Roasted Jalapenos
pinch of each of the following:
cayenne powder
chili powder
parsley
garlic powder
cracked pepper
First step is to roast your garlic and jalapenos. Start with 4 Bulbs of garlic and cut only the top off, straight across, place in the center of a small square pieces of tinfoil. Drizzle a small amount of olive oil on the tops and spread with a cooking brush to saturate the garlic, finish off with a small pinch of salt on the top of each and then fold the tinfoil loosely upward so that the four corners meet and pinch to slightly to hold closed. You'll need 6-8 small jalapenos or 4-6 large jalapenos. Cut in halves and clean out the seeds in the center. Take a large square of tinfoil and place the jalapenos on loosely, drizzle the same olive oil and sea salt mixture on top, fold together just enough to keep the jalapenos wrapped loosely and not smothering each other.
Cook in the oven at 375 for 30 minutes.

While your waiting on your garlic and jalapenos, pull out your food processor and the remaining ingredients. I like to use a very small amount of olive oil on my cooking brush and lightly brush the inside of the processor. Put in your cream cheese, sour cream and spices. Rotate on low for about 30 seconds. put in the fridge until your garlic and jalapenos are done and had a chance to cool. If you don't cool the garlic and jalapenos the cream cheese will turn lumpy.
Once your garlic is done and cooled for a few minutes, you can squeeze the soft roasted garlic out of it's shell into a measuring receptor. Take your jalapenos out of the tinfoil and let cool.
Take out your cream cheese mixture from the fridge and add your roasted garlic and peppers. Mix on high for 30-45 second. Check the consistency. Mix more to make smoother and less to keep chunky. This really is by preference.
Serve with Tortillas, Raw Veggies, Chips or whatever your heart desires. Yummy!

These are good for any Sunday in any month of the year. But pulling these out at a football party will heat up your event!

Fun Little Gestures that don't break the bank!

Christmas can be a tough time of year for everyone. Some times making your list of people your going to give gifts to can be tough. You never want to offend anyone but where do you draw the line?

There are very creative ways that you can give the gesture without diggin  deep into those pockets. We have come up with some fun, inexpensive ways to show your thoughtful! With a little time invested and some creativity the possibilities are endless.

Photos

With all of the cool free software available you can take a simple photo and add effects that make it original. You can add text, frames, change the color and your biggest cost would be a picture frame. With dollar stores on every corner these days you can pick up a simple frame for $1.00. Check out some of these websites for ideas.

We love the black and whites. Like this one I made for my husband...

Home-made Chocolates, Candies and Cookies!!

What is Christmas without sweet treats? I am a sucker for sweets over the holidays and I love making them. Candy and chocolate molds are super easy to come by. Places like JYSK, the Dollarstore and Superstore are great for cheap molds. There are tonnes of websites and books available for pattern ideas, creative  shapes and ways to make your treats fun. Making homemade treats are a fun way to bond with children, friends, and family.

Then you can make the wrapping festive by using a basket, colored cellophane, or a paper bag dressed up with Christmas drawings or fun felts.

Home-made Treasure Box

These can be fun to make and can be personalized to your friends tastes or likes. The two I like the most are:

Wooden pre-made boxes from the dollarstore. They are simple and easy to paint, glue and decorate with stones etc. They can be found for under 5 dollars and can be made to your specifications.

Old books converted into treasure chests by gluing the pages together and using and exacto-knife to cut out the center. Adding a clasp or clip to hold it shut are inexpensive and can be made to look antique. Such a beautiful idea!

Sauces and Dips

I love to create my own sauces and dips at home. What better way to show your love than through the stomach. Making your own creation is fun and easy. Then you can get awesome little jars shaped to your liking and fill them with your secret sauce. The cool part is you can label them with stickers, homemade labels, or just wrap them with Christmas ribbons.

Anyway you look at it there are a million ideas that can show you care and your thinking of your friends during the holidays.

I've added some websites to the Christmas Links if your stuck or just looking for ideas.

Cheers to you and I hope you have a beautiful Christmas!!

Christmas Lights Gone Wild

Christmas Light Tips

Hanging Christmas lights can be torturous, but the end result is worth it. We always start early with our lights so that we get the most out of their beauty. Let's start with some easy tips to follow....

First you will have to decide whether you are going to use last years little ditties or whether your going to splurge on some fresh new lights. Their are so many cool types of lights available and their not all that hard on the pocket book. You also have to decide on clear, white or colored and if you would like solid lit, blinking or chasing. Once these tough decisions are made it's time to look at lighting requirements. This is a crucial step so take your time shopping and do not be afraid of asking questions. The internet is a valuable resource for planning your light purchase.

C7 and C9 lights have 5- or 10- watt bulbs are similar to the picture below. These lights are beautiful but get hot and use more energy. So keep that in mind.

Mini-lights are more popular because they are less expensive to purchase and can be easy on your hydro bill that comes in after Christmas. These types of lights only use 1.5- to 2.5- volt bulbs.

Note that larger light sets will not be affected by one burnt out bulb whereas mini lights will. Pulling out last years lights can be stressful, when you plug them in and they don't work. No one wants to spend an hour or more going through each individual socket, just to find that the whole string is shot. This can be prevented with extra handle and care when packing up your lights. We'll go over these tips a little later on in the segment.

Light inspection is a step that can NOT be over looked!!

Make sure there are no frays or rips in the cord will prevent fire hazards later. If there are damaged bulbs be sure to use gloves and fine tipped needle nose pliers to remove the damaged bulb.

 Locating your power receptacle.

Using a switch controlled outlet or timing unit is ideal. Plan on using heavy duty extension cords that plug into a standard 120-volt outlet. be careful to not use indoor equipment outdoors. This can be very dangerous.

Measurements are key.

Taking measurements now will prevent you coming up short later. It is best to measure the area of your home, and include window sills, heights of bushes and trees and any odd shaped areas that will be displaying lights.

Lining up your ladder.

If eaves are low, a step-ladder may be sufficient, otherwise an extension ladder may be required. If you have never used an extension ladder before please look online or instructions. improper use will lead to a disaster and possible injuries.

Hooks, Clips and Hangers.

When shopping for hooks, clips and hangers the objective is to hang lights easily and without damaging your property. Plastic clips are best for eaves. Nail in clips or tube light clips are good for stucco and window sills. It's easy to find light hanging kits at stores like Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Home Sense Etc.

Some people keep their lights up all year long but if you don't be sure when packing up your lights take care to fold them properly and store in a dry bin. Use clips or elastic bands to hold them together and prevent tangling.

Happy light hanging!!!

Now for those of you that don't have any interest in hanging lights or your short on time there is help to be had. So much help is available.

Ideas to add to your Christmas Cocktail Party!! Much more to come!

The most important part of planning a party is having a plan!! Knowing how many guests, what your budget is, what kind of food your going to serve, what decorations you will have, plans for safe rides home are all part of a successful party!

The best way to make your Christmas party a hit is creativity!

Use prizes as a way of getting your guests involved, such as adding a note on your invitations offering a prize for the best dressed or the most creative costume!

Choosing a menu list is high on priority status. Once you have your guest list determined you can decide on how much food you will be laying down!

There are many ways you can create a menu. You will have to decide based on guests if you will be hiring a caterer, having a group from your work or social circle help, or just doing it yourself. For small groups this is a fairly easy task, for larger groups it is advisable to hire help. It may cost more money initially but it will pay off in the end.

Next on the agenda is getting those decorations started. It's not hard to decorate for Christmas. If your on a limited budget than the nearest dollar store will have a bag full of decor for under 20.00, Even if you have a larger budget you can have amazingly inexpensive centerpieces and stand out pieces that will keep you on budget or in some cases even below.

Using glass vases with christmas balls or fill with water and a simple floatinmg candle look elegent and easy on the pocketbook.

Christmas Planning – 2011 Christmas 10 Week Plan

by PLANNINGQUEEN on OCTOBER 13, 2011
Hello and welcome to Planning With Kids! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my Free Email Updates. Thanks for visiting!
It is now less than 10 weeks until Christmas. I do love Christmas and the festive season in the lead up. I have found through experience the easiest way to make sure that I enjoy this time is to plan for it.
Over the last few years on the blog I have shared my 10 week preparation plan (2009, 2010). Each year is the plan is different, as it depends on the theme chosen for Christmas that year and also how we are spending Christmas Day. If you are haven’t chose a theme for your Christmas this year and are after some inspiration you can check out my post on Christmas Themes.
Naturally these plans don’t include every single thing that I do to be organised for Christmas, but it covers off most of the big ticket items.
Some weeks depending on my workload and what is happening with the family, I may swap around the activities. But the ability to do this so easy is the beauty of planning – it actually gives you flexibility!
This is my plan as it stands now:
  • 10 weeks to go – Christmas budget
  • 9 weeks to go – Donate food and toys
  • 8 weeks to go – Christmas cards
  • 7 weeks to go – Christmas presents ideas for boys
  • 6 weeks to go – Teachers gifts
  • 5 weeks to go – Menu plan
  • 4 weeks to go – Handmade christmas decorations
  • 3 weeks to go – Work plan for Christmas Day
  • 2 weeks to go – Christmas treat for parties
  • 1 weeks to go – Place settings and menus
  • 0 weeks to go – Tips for enjoying Christmas Day when you are the host
Absolutely love this link....

other ideas...

Were so excited to share our Holiday Headquarters with you all!! We hope to help as many as we can and gain knowledge just the same!
